Why does one currency have several rates?

Denomination changes the rate for dollars, yuan and ringgit. A 100 USD note travels and re-sells better than a stack of fives, so it earns the highest tier. Euros, pounds, francs and dirhams run on a single rate whatever note you hand over.

Chinese yuan follow the same logic across three tiers, from 100 and 50 notes down to the 5, 2 and 1 yuan notes, each tier with its own rate.

What condition do the banknotes need to be in?

Bring clean, flat, unmarked notes. Cashiers check every note for tears, tape, pen marks, stamps, water damage and missing corners. A note in poor condition either takes a lower rate or gets returned, because the bank that receives it later applies the same check.

Pre-2006 US dollars, the "white" series, are accepted at a lower rate than the current notes. Holding older or damaged paper of any currency? Photograph both sides and send the picture to WhatsApp or Telegram before you travel.

Do you need a passport?

Yes. Thai law requires a licensed money changer to identify every customer who exchanges cash on the premises, so bring your passport.

How long does the quoted rate hold?

Sixty minutes from the moment the deal is confirmed in the chat. That window covers the drive from Laguna, Cherng Talay, Boat Avenue, Layan or Surin, so the number you agreed is the number you get at the counter.

What does a net rate mean?

Every cost sits inside the rate you were quoted. No counting fee, no handling charge, no percentage taken off the total at the counter. Multiply your amount by the quoted number and that is the baht you carry out, which is why the arithmetic on these pages works out exactly.
