What is an SBP transfer and why use it in Thailand?

SBP is Russia's instant interbank transfer system, and on Phuket it works as a bridge between a Russian account and baht in your hand. You transfer rubles inside Russia by phone number, and the exchange office pays you baht here.

The reason people use it is simple. Russian bank cards stopped working in Thai ATMs and terminals in 2022 and still do not work in 2026, so money sitting in a Russian account has no direct route to a Thai counter. An SBP transfer plus a local payout closes that gap without anyone flying with cash.

It also solves the arrival problem in reverse. If you are already on the island and run short, you do not need to fly home for notes. The transfer takes minutes from a phone.

How does the process work, step by step?

Four steps, in this order: request, rate hold, transfer, payout. Nothing about it requires a visit to a bank branch on either side.

In step one you write to WhatsApp or Telegram with the amount and whether you want cash or a card payout. In step two you confirm and the rate is fixed for the next 60 minutes.

In step three you send the SBP transfer from your banking app. In step four you take the baht in the office, at your address, or on your Thai card.

The 60-minute window exists for one reason: rates move, and you should not be racing them. It covers the time to open the app, check the details and press send without watching the number shift underneath you.

Do you need a passport or a Thai bank account?

No passport is required for a remote operation settled by transfer. Thai law requires a licensed money changer to identify every customer exchanging cash on the premises, so a passport comes out only when you collect notes at the counter.

A Thai bank account is optional. With one, the baht lands on your card at SCB, Kasikorn or another Thai bank within minutes of confirmation. Without one, you take cash in the office at 246 Bandon-Cherngtalay Rd or ask for delivery.

What are the minimums and the timing?

The minimum is 10,000 THB per operation, and amounts from 50,000 THB get an individual rate. Below the minimum the fixed costs of the operation outweigh the exchange itself, which is why the floor exists.

Timing follows the transfer. SBP moves money inside Russia in seconds, so the delay you feel is the payout: minutes for a Thai card, a short drive for cash in the office, and a delivery slot for cash at your address.

Plan a large amount ahead. If you need several hundred thousand baht for a deposit or a property payment, send the request the day before rather than an hour before the meeting.

What do you receive as proof?

You receive an electronic receipt for the operation. It records what you sent, the rate applied and the baht paid out, which is what you want if the money is going toward rent, a deposit or a property payment.

Support runs 24/7 in the messengers, so questions asked at midnight get an answer before the office opens. The rate you were quoted and confirmed is the rate on the receipt, because the commission sits inside the rate and nothing is added at payout.
